Plot
Narrated by Dhananjay Chauhan, the film portrays the journey of her life spanning five decades as a doctoral scholar at Panjab University. Production
Admitted, produced by Pinaka Mediaworks, was initially announced for Film Festivals in August 2018 with a runtime of 126 minutes, 2 hours and 6 minutes. The principal filming of this docudrama took place in and around the campus of Panjab University. Director Ojaswwee Sharma captured the entire film in Chandigarh, primarily within the Punjab University premises and other key locations that resonated with the story. The filming process spanned several months, covering different seasons and events, including the Pride week called Garvotsav in Chandigarh, ensuring each frame was filled with authenticity and accuracy. The final cut, released after the festival circuit, was trimmed to 117 minutes, 20 minutes shorter than the festival version.
Release
The film was scheduled to release in March 2020 on International Transgender Day of Visibility, the film’s release was delayed due to the COVID-19 lockdown in India.
It was eventually released on Rolling Frames Entertainment’s YouTube channel on 13 June 2020 during the Pride Month 2020 to resounding success having been watched by lacs of people across the globe for free on the internet.
Admitted became. the only Made-In-India feature documentary on a Transgender’s life to be released during International Pride Month 2020

“Admitted is a docudrama that holds a special place in my heart, as it chronicles a transformative journey that unfolded right in my hometown. In a world where everyone talks about the importance of an all-inclusive society, I couldn’t help but question if we truly offer even a fraction of the choices and rights that we ourselves enjoy to the third gender. Being labeled as ‘different’ is, in many ways, a hindrance on its own.
Through ‘Admitted,’ I aimed to delve into the remarkable journey of a wonder woman’ in Dhananjay Chauhan who defied societal norms, overcame stigma, self-loathing, and self-denial, all in pursuit of a life of dignity. But it goes beyond just her story. It sheds light on the struggles faced by hundreds of thousands of individuals who, simply due to their orientation, are denied the opportunity to live a life of respect.
I am particularly proud to showcase the significant steps taken by the people, administrations, the international governments, and the Panjab University, which became the first educational institution in the country to recognize and ‘admit’ the third gender and having built washrooms for the transgenders. By providing them the right to education, we take a significant stride towards addressing the challenges faced by the transgender community.
In just under two hours, ‘Admitted’ encapsulates a riveting tale of Dhananjay Chauhan’s courage, determination, and the unwavering will to be true to oneself. I hope this film inspires others to embrace their own aspirations and strive for a society where everyone is treated with dignity and acceptance.”
